Preparing for Your Newborn Session

Newborn and Baby

Hello, and congratulations! We couldn’t be more thrilled to have you as part of the Lovelight family.

We know that welcoming a new baby into your life is an incredibly special time, and we can’t wait to capture those precious moments. We understand that photo shoots can sometimes feel intimidating, especially if you’re a first-timer. But trust us when we say that we’re here to make your experience easy, relaxed, and fun.

Leaving the house is likely to sound unappealing as you welcome your new arrival into the world: visitors come to you, dinner is delivered to your door, and caring for your baby (and sleep!) is top of your priority list.

But what if you want professional photographs taken of your little one when they’re still so tiny and new?

Rather than making an expedition to a local studio, let me come to you, and have your newborn photography at home.

Here’s a helpful guide to how you can capture those irreplaceable early days by an experienced newborn photographer without leaving the comfort of the family home.

How to Prepare for an At-Home Newborn Session?

Ah, the age-old question of whether your home is big enough or tidy enough for a photo shoot. Let me assure you that as a skilled photographer, I can weave my magic in any setting, capturing the beauty of everyday life.

Your home can serve as the backdrop to eternalize your family’s love and connection, or I can use my pop-up studio.

Preparing for your at-home newborn session is a breeze. A few simple touches like tidying up surfaces and having clean blankets available can set the stage for capturing those tender moments with your little one.

I often use your bed for some photos so it would be great if you have a plain white duvet to hand. It’s also helpful to keep your home nice and warm to ensure your baby remains sleepy, particularly if we take any photos naked.

Venturing outside during your session offers a breath of fresh air and adds another dimension to your family story.

It’s an opportunity for older siblings to play freely, creating heart warming moments that encapsulate the essence of real family life.

Now, what to wear!

When it comes to what to wear, less is often more for newborns. We suggest using a simple nappy cover or plain bodysuit to showcase your newborn’s tiny details.

Simple and timeless outfits always look great, so we recommend dressing in plain colours.

Newborn babies are great photographed naked, wrapped in a blanket, or swaddled. I will bring wraps and fabrics to use in your session so don’t worry about having loads of outfits for your baby.

It is also important to include anything the family has made for your baby.

For parents, I find plain, simple colours work really well. Try and avoid anything too vibrant or heavily patterned. Simple and timeless outfits will always look good and make the focus on your newborn rather than on your outfit itself.

If you would like me to capture any skin-on-skin images without wanting to go completely topless, a bandeau is perfect. Its also good to avoid wearing any tight underwear that may cause indents on your skin.

Showcasing your heritage, your job, or even a favourite team with props and accessories creates stunning images that showcase the uniqueness of your family.

We know you’re going to have a great time with us, and we can’t wait to meet you and your newest addition.

At Lovelight, our personalized approach means each session is tailored to your family’s preferences, creating a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all. You’ll walk away with beautiful images to display on your walls and memories to cherish for a lifetime.

What Happens After Your Shoot?

After capturing precious moments with your family in your Lovelight session, it’s time to take the next step – the Design Consultation.

During the Design Consultation, our friendly and experienced team will be on hand to provide guidance and advice based on your unique preferences and the style of your home. We know that each family is different, and we take pride in understanding and capturing your family’s unique story. Whether you’re looking for a timeless gallery wall or a single eye-catching centrepiece, we’ll work together to find the perfect arrangement for your home.

Design consultations take place online 3-4 days after your session allowing us time to carefully curate your images, ensuring that we present you with the very best selection. We’ll showcase the moments that brought laughter, love, and joy during your session, allowing you to relive those cherished memories every time you glance at your portraits.
